Fatal Frost by Nancy Mehl

fFatal Frost (Defenders of Justice #1)

From Goodreads.com: Mehl Ramps Up the Suspense in This Brand-New U.S. Marshals Series
Mercy Brennan followed in her father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, but she has no interest in any other connection to him. A U.S. Marshal in St. Louis, Missouri, she's assigned to a joint task force with the St. Louis PD that puts her back into contact with her father and in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang.
When the gang has reason to believe Mercy has possession of some highly sensitive and incriminating information, her boss assigns Mark St. Laurent--a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until they can guarantee her safety.
Initially unaware of the danger she's in and uncomfortable working with Mark, Mercy's frustration escalates when she discovers the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark. It isn't until a freak ice storm hits, stranding them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office, that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy closing in to put their lives at imminent risk. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

My take:  I really enjoyed this book.  I did figure out one of the surprises towards the beginning of the book but it didn't ruin the book for me.  There was plenty of action  and suspense.  I liked the way that Mercy changed throughout the book.  I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Unbreakable by Nancy Mehl

About Unbreakable:

Gentle and unassuming, Hope Kauffman has never been one to question the traditions of her Mennonite upbringing. She quietly helps her father run Kingdom Quilts and has agreed to the betrothal he arranged for her with the devout but shy Ebbie Miller.
Despite the attempts of Hope and other Kingdom residents to maintain the status quo, changes have already begun to stir in the small Mennonite town. The handsome and charismatic Jonathon Wiese is the leader of the move to reform, while Ebbie insists Kingdom must remain true to its foundation. When Hope's safety is threatened by a mysterious outsider, she can't help but question what she's always been taught about the Mennonite tradition of nonviolence.
As it swiftly becomes apparent the threat Hope faced is only the beginning, the town that's always stood so strong finds itself divided. With tensions high and their lives endangered by an unknown enemy, will Hope and the people of Kingdom allow fear and division to break them or will they draw on the strength of the God they serve?

My Take:  This is a fabulouse sequel to the first book in the series.  I am happy that Nancy  focused on different characters in this book but was also glad to see some of the familiar faces back.  You do not have to have read the first book to enjoy this book.  Once again I liked that this book was based on a Mennonite community.  I love Amish fiction but is nice to read about another group that have similarities but differences also.  The mystery of who is causing harm to these people and how they chose to confront the situation is both fascinating and compelling.  This book kept me turning pages till I reached the end.  If you Like Amish Fiction I would recommend it for a little bit of change of pace.

Inescapable by Nancy Mehl

Inescapable by Nancy Mehl

About the Book: Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, Kingdom, Kansas, with plans never to return.

But five years later, the new life she built is falling apart. Lizzie knows she's being followed, and she's certain the same mysterious stranger is behind the threatening letters she's received. Realizing she'll have to run again, the only escape Lizzie can manage is a return to the last place she wants to go.

Once she arrives in Kingdom, Lizzie is confident she'll be safe until she comes up with a new plan. In reacquainting herself with the town and its people--especially her old friend, Noah Housler--she wonders if she judged her hometown and her Mennonite faith too harshly. However, just as she begins to come to terms with her roots, Lizzie is horrified to discover the danger she ran from is closer than ever.

No longer sure who to trust and fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, Lizzie finds she has only one place left to run--to the Father whose love is inescapable.

My take:  I really enjoyed this book. It isn't about the Amish although with the Horse and buggy on the front you may think it is.  It is about Old Order Mennonite.  Which don't seem to be to much different that the Amish.  I liked the mystery that was thrown into the story that kept me guessing to what was going to happen next.  I also liked the way that different characters made Lizzie see her life abit diffeently than what she remembered it.  I was sad that the town and church were under such oppressive leadership for such a long time.  I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Amish fiction with a little bit of mystery thrown in.  Bit as they use to say on Reading Rainbow "you don't have to take my word for it".  Follow this link to find out what others thought of this book.
