Virals by Kathy Reichs Audio Book Review

Virals | [Kathy Reichs]
Virals by Kathy Reichs
narrated by Cristin Milioti

From Audible.com:The thrilling young adult debut from the #1 New York Times- best-selling author.
Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.
As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot—if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.
Fortunately, they are now more than friends—they're a pack. They are Virals.

My Take:  I have always liked the tv show Bones and I have read one of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan books, I hope to read more of them in the future.  I have seem this book pop up once in a while on other book review blogs and it sounded interesting so I thought that I would listen to it.  This book is truly written with a younger audience in mind probably early teen although older readers will probably enjoy it (Which I did).  I enjoyed the mystery that the group finds themselves in .  Like another reviewer stated this book is really in the lines of a more modern Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys.  There is a bit of romantic involvement but nothing other than the main character stating that she liked a certain boy and that some other boys maybe interested in her.  I am mot sure that I totally buy how they get infected by a canine parvovius but it did make for an interesting  plot with the side effects that it led to.  I am really looking forward to listening to the next in this series.
I thought that the narrator did an excellent job of narrating.  She played the main character really well although her teen age boys could use some work.

This book was taken from my personal audio library.

  1. I hadn't heard about this one. Will have to order it for the library. I'm reading all about virals in The Twelve right now, so I think that will be enough for me!

  2. I didn't realize this book was related to the Temperance Brennan books. Aren't those really realistic? The whole canine virus thing seems like a weird addition to that world.

  3. The way they are related are that the main character is her niece and is interested in science. The book is for YA so they had to add something to draw that crowd in thus the canine virus.
