  1. This is a superb book. I literally could not stop reading. A lot of others have gone into the basic story so I won't, but it's a classic "romance" with a wicked guardian and a run-away heroine.

It is obvious that the author did a lot of solid research on the lives of servants during Victorian times and it shows. I found in particular the relationship between the heroine and her former maid (who actually helps her run away) very realistic and nicely done.

I gave this four stars instead of five for the following reasons: First, this book is advertised as a "Christian" romance - published by one of the largest online Christian publishers. I found that a bit fake and sort of manipulative. There's nothing Christian about these characters except at intervals in the story (almost like an after-thought) the characters have morning prayers or read their Bibles. And then three chapters later, "Ooops, time for prayers again." But don't get me wrong, there's nothing in this book that would offend anyone who's looking for a very "clean" romance.
